MATERIAL LAB: show / tell / shop presents 8 designers and artisans offering demonstrations of their design process and methods, presentation of work in progress, and the opportunity to shop designer collections.

Featured designers share a creative process which draws on artisanal traditions to redefine contemporary silhouettes. Designers featured include: Andrea Reynders, Anna Brown, Gillion Carrara, Hvnter Gvtherer by Laura Prieto-Velasco, Production Mode by Jamie Hayes, Redshift by Kristin Mariani, Studio Herron by Dee Clements, and Syl Markt by Lauren Markt.

Founded in 2018 by Andrea Reynders, Anna Brown, and Gillion Carrara, we are MATERIAL creates interactive forums for artisanal practice in clothing and accessory design. Through curated, experimental gatherings that address an aspect of the design practice, such as ideation, collection design, and material sourcing, the project showcases artisanal clothing and accessory designers by highlighting their underlying design process.

IRON AGE - THE ORIGINS

2018 was a big year for Hvnter Gvtherer, and for me personally. IRON AGE was a collection I had been dreaming up since early 2017, which was a new direction into clothing and related accessories such as hats, handbags, and new “homewares” including a handmade whip fashioned out of recycled leather with an iron spike handle, windchimes made out of forged bronze and hand polished and sealed recycled vintage iron nails, and a series of 6 cast iron Spears.

The collection was first previewed on December 8, 2017 during a collaborative performance with local flamenco group KANTUZ at the Instituto Cervantes in Chicago, IL. You can watch a video of the performance here.

The first three pieces presented during that performance were such a success that I decided to go ahead and develop the vision further into a 13 piece collection. Hvnter Gvtherer presented its first fashion show of IRON AGE at Black Oak Tattoo in Chicago, IL. The presentation was community funded all the models I chose were dear friends and muses who inspire me daily. The fashion show was DJ’d by local artist Chris Hefner. The lookbook was photographed by Mateo Stephens of fotodemateo and designed by Eileen Tjan of Other Studio. Later, the collection was photographed by Dawn Howard on Benji Morino and presented as a shoppable catalogue. The fashion show was introduced by Leslie Gray who created and presented the IRON AGE ORIGINS story live. You can listen to a version of the performance on Soundcloud here, recorded at HDDN VLLY STUDIOS by friend and local sound artist / musician MT COAST.

The roots of IRON AGE are personal in nature and political at their core, which reflects my personal approach to creating every collection you see here at Hvnter Gvtherer. Everything has a story. Everything is born from real-life experience with a love of connecting past to future.

I hope you enjoyed this collection, it marks the last work I will create for some time as I tend to a new addition to my family and begin a new chapter of creating meaning in what 2019 holds. Please make sure to join my mailing list and check back here for updates on the development of my next collection, to be released late 2019.

Thank you for reading. My best to you all! xx - L

PROCESSSIX ARTISTS IN CONTEXT
OPENING RECEPTION SEPTEMBER 15, 6-9 PM

Pavilion 20thC presents an intriguing group of six artists, where process is an underlying
theme and the integral link between concept and creation.
The processes of additive and reductive, layering and repetition or the stripping away of chosen materials and
iterations of patterns and space to create new languages, creates a way to comment on life.
This exhibition includes sculpture, painting, drawing and furniture,
shown in Pavilion's curated collection of French and Italian 20th century design,
allows for the ability to view the work within an historical context.
Pavilion continues its ongoing dialogue between the historical design and the contemporary.
